Wholesome Hub Joins TerraCycle for Beauty Products, Oral Care, Mailing Satchels & More! Wholesome Hub Joins TerraCycle for Beauty Products, Oral Care, Mailing Satchels & More!

We’ve just upped our recycling game! We’re so excited to announce that we’ve signed up as a TerraCycle collection point for four programmes - beauty products, oral care, dish and air care and mailing satchels. Read on to find out what this means and how we’re helping the planet further with this brilliant recycling initiative by TerraCycle.

Recycling is now so much a part of our psyche, that we do it almost without thinking. We put our glass, paper, metals and (some) plastics dutifully in the right recycling bins and we’re always conscious of what goes in and what can’t.

But what if we wanted to do more?

What if we wanted to recycle our empty mascaras, air freshener aerosols and toothpaste tubes?

Until now, all of these things have been difficult, or even impossible, to recycle. But now, it’s become a whole lot easier!

The Brilliance of TerraCycle

TerraCycle specialises in taking the hard to recycle waste that’s so commonly produced in households across the country - and recycling it. It does this by teaming up with big name household brands to make recycling their products en masse, much easier.

Then, they pair up with environmentally conscientious companies, such as us, to allow collection points for this otherwise non recyclable waste.

The company promise that no waste that reaches them will be sent to landfill.

They believe in a circular, more sustainable system of waste disposal, that keeps materials in circulation as long as possible. This is in stark contrast to the usual, linear model of make, use, dispose.

Everything is turned into something else that’s useful.

That means that say a Colgate toothpaste tube is returned to Colgate to be cleaned and turned into another tube. Or it might mean that coffee grounds become compost, or plastic bottles are melted down for use in road building.

Exciting, huh?! So what products can, and can’t, be recycled with TerraCycle…?

The TerraCycle Beauty Products Recycling Programme

In this brigade, normal plastic or glass bottles from your shampoo, shower gel or body lotions etc are out. These can go into your normal plastic recycling bins.

Everything else is in, and includes:

  • The pumps, spray and trigger lids and parts from beauty product bottles (remember, separate the bottles which then go in your normal recycling)
  • Cosmetic and beauty product plastic tubes and caps
  • Black and dark coloured plastic packaging (even black plastic bottles, which can’t go in your normal recycling)
  • Wipes and face masks (these all contain flexible plastics and should never be flushed down the toilet)
  • Plastic films and lids from beauty product packaging

Remember to rinse everything before putting it in your TerraCycle box.

The TerraCycle Dish and Air Recycling Programme

Again, this brigade takes all waste from dish washing and aerosols that cannot be recycled in your normal kerbside recycling bins. So any cardboard should be put in this normal recycling, but you can add plastic washing up liquid bottles to this brigade.

Here’s what’s in:

  • Plastic washing up liquid bottles and their lids
  • Flexible dishwasher tablet packaging
  • Empty air freshener cans and spray bottles
  • Plug in air fresheners and their refills
  • Clip on car air fresheners and their refills

Ensure that aerosols are empty and that the packaging is rinsed.

The TerraCycle Oral Care Recycling Programme

TerraCycle have teamed up with Colgate for this brigade, but any brand of oral care products are accepted.

You can collect all oral care items including:

  • Toothpaste tubes and caps
  • Toothbrushes
  • The cardboard outer packaging from toothpaste tubes
  • Dental floss containers

Electric toothbrush units and heads are not part of this brigade. Make sure that toothpaste tubes are squeezed empty (you don’t need to rinse them) and dental floss containers no longer have any dental floss in them.

The TerraCycle Mailing Satchel Recycling Programme

TerraCycle have teamed up with Australia Post and can accept from any brand, the following mailing satchels:

  • Pre-paid Satchels
  • Padded Bags

Electric toothbrush units and heads are not part of this brigade. Make sure that toothpaste tubes are squeezed empty (you don’t need to rinse them) and dental floss containers no longer have any dental floss in them.

How Does it Work?

To be part of this green revolution, all you need to do is collect your bottle tops, aerosols, toothpaste tubes are anything else that can be accepted by TerraCycle as part of these recycling programs.

When you’ve got a nice little collection (or you’re running out of space) either post it to us or pop down to our office and warehouse, say hi and drop off your recycling into the relevant boxes.

We’re at 65 Sparks Avenue, Fairfield, Victoria, 3078.
We’d love to meet some of the wonderful people that are helping to make our world a better place!

We’ll take care of the rest and make sure all your empty packaging gets recycled properly and enjoys a new lease of life as something else.

‘Borrowed Packaging’ with Wholesome Hub and TerraCycle

TerraCycle are spreading the idea of ‘borrowed packaging’ and we love it. Whilst in an ideal world, we’d live completely free from packaging and waste, this simply isn’t possible when we all live busy lives.

So if something like packaging is so necessary, then why not make sure that it’s reused or recycled responsibly at the end of its life?

The plastics collected by TerraCycle are generally melted down into a hard plastic that can be used to make other plastic items.

So sign up to TerraCycle, and bring your empty packaging down to us or send it off to TerraCycle when you’re finished. What could be more simple?!
